Zoll D is a shelving unit that impresses with its minimalist design and versatility. Designed in 1993 by Basel-based designers Lukas Buol and Marco Zünd for Nils Holger Moormann, it combines clean lines with functional sophistication.
The boxes and shelves are made of the same material and fit together precisely. Thin sheets of metal are formed into sturdy shelves through carefully executed bending. The boxes fit perfectly into the resulting recesses. Without any tools or additional connecting parts, shelves are created that are both visually appealing and structurally sound. A simple twist of the boxes is all it takes—and the compartments can be stocked from all sides.
The Zoll D configuration remains flexible at all times: boxes can be repositioned at any time, and the shelf can be expanded as desired. Behind its simple appearance lies a complex development process, as the precise fit between the recesses and the boxes is essential for the system’s stability. Thus, during its development, the shelving unit had to push the boundaries multiple times—and was consistently given the same designation: Zoll D.
