The cryosphere encompasses all frozen components of the Earth system. Ninety percent of this ice is located in Antarctica. This ice is also the largest repository of data on our climate history. It is a time capsule that enables scientists to trace our planet’s climate history and, based on the air bubbles trapped within it, to identify trends in CO₂, greenhouse gases, and temperatures from past glacial and interglacial periods. The epitome of climate change is thus the ice core—a cylinder of layered ice extracted from the depths of our planet’s ice sheets. The ice core thus becomes the element that raises awareness and calls for action. The ice core of “Criosfera” has shed its frozen form and consists of layers of blown recycled glass with an optical core modeled after the refractive properties of the ice surface of the Antarctic Plateau to maximize light scattering, and evokes the layering of polar ice. “Criosfera” is thus a synthesis of optical, material-engineering, and scientific knowledge, reflected in a manifesto of values that bridges the present and the future. The outer cylinder of blown glass is the structure within which the optoelectronic unit disappears without casting any visible shadows. Its boundaries and uniqueness are rooted in craftsmanship.
