Good design needs good observation, as we all know. The brothers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni were inspired by curved street lighting in the early 1960s for the Arco arc lamp for the Flos label, which they adapted for room lighting.
Street lamps are firmly fixed to the ground and, in contrast to the room stand lamps commonly used up to that time, are capable of illuminating several metres within their radius.
For 'Arco', they chose a heavy block of marble as a counterpart for the floor anchoring, to which a steel arch with a luminaire sitting on it is attached.
The base of the lamp consists of a heavy block of white marble with rounded corners. A hole in the base serves both to transport the lamp and to attach the arch-shaped stand.
This has a sweeping wide design, which I particularly like and gives the lamp character and personality. The stand consists of three parts, which are made of stainless steel and which can be telescopically inserted into each other.
This allows the lamp to be adjusted to three different heights, with a maximum of two metres above the base. The upper part of the shade is a hood that is fixed to the stand.
The lamp is still considered an icon of modern industrial design and is part of the collection of the Museum of Modern Art.
