The Volkshaus furniture series includes a lounge chair and stool made of solid oak, covered with a hard-wearing cord, as well as a matching side table. The complex construction of the frames, in which X-shapes made of square timber intersect, gives the furniture its architectural expression. Due to their asymmetry, they appear different from every angle. The central design feature of the series is the point at which the wooden legs intersect and interlock: This wooden connection appears simple, but is actually highly complex - and was created as part of an extensive research process by Herzog & de Meuron. Inspired by traditional wooden joints from Japanese architecture, the ingenious construction principle gives the furniture its sculptural character. The Volkshaus series is used wherever relaxed seating is desired - in private living spaces as well as prestigious waiting areas, lobbies or hotel rooms. For example, the Lounge Chair, Stool and Side Table can be found in the Volkshaus Basel boutique hotel, which was designed by Herzog & de Meuron and lent its name to the collection.
