Edo Pan by Alessi

The Edo pots, designed by Patricia Urquiola, bring together diverse cultural references and formal inspirations. The designer interprets this resulting diversity in a playful and casual way—a combination of various influences that evokes the essence of cooking: blending different ingredients into a single dish.

Edo is the former name of Tokyo, and the connection to Japan in this project stems from a set of tableware that Patricia Urquiola uses in her own kitchen. She purchased the pots in Japan, and their simple, elegant design served as inspiration for the Edo series.

The designer’s idea was to use specific details to give an industrial production project a softer feel and to deliberately break away from the strict rules of mass production. These include, in particular, the slightly flared rims of the pots as well as the handles, whose design is reminiscent of ribbons attached to the body of the pots. Their shape does not appear industrially manufactured at all, but rather as if handcrafted.

The name “Edo” also evokes the Latin term “edere,” meaning “to eat,” and thus once again expresses the encounter between different cultures that characterizes the entire project. The concave shape of the lids and the knobs attached to them are reminiscent of a beret resting on a surface—a nod to Patricia Urquiola’s Basque roots.
