The Björk rug collection, designed by Swedish designer Lena Bergström, is inspired by the distinctive black-and-white bark of the birch tree. The name “Björk” means “birch” in Swedish and reflects the collection’s close connection to nature. The hand-woven structure made of high-quality wool evokes the distinctive surface of the tree trunk, while fine leather details symbolize the inner layer of birch bark and lend the design a special depth.
“The birch, a tree found throughout Sweden, is my inspiration for the Björk collection,” explains Lena Bergström. “Textiles create a beautiful surface in the home, just as natural as stone or wood. To me, Björk is like poetry—like a soft whisper in the room.”
The characteristic mottled color effect is created by weaving differently colored wool yarns into the weft. This gives each rug a lively, natural look. Wool impresses not only with its pleasant softness but also with its natural resistance to dirt, thanks to the natural oils it contains.
Every Björk rug is handmade and is therefore truly one-of-a-kind. Slight variations in color, texture, and appearance are a testament to traditional craftsmanship and give each piece its own unique character. The whiteness of the wool fibers may also vary, as it depends on when the sheep were sheared. The result is a high-quality designer rug that uniquely combines Scandinavian aesthetics, natural materials, and timeless elegance.
