One of my favourite architects of the last century is Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. His modernist buildings stand out for their simplicity and sense of form.
The chair 'S 533' is characterised by a targeted restriction in the use of materials, elegance in the lines and transparency in the effect. The special comfort of the furniture is due to its ability to permanently elasticise the spring - just like a cantilever chair should be.
This effect comes about because Mies van der Rohe designed the front part of the tubular steel frame as a large arch made of spring-loaded tubular steel. While most of the designs from the 1920s were rather simple and functional, this armchair clearly bears the architect's signature.
The chair was first presented in 1927 in the Weissenhof housing estate and, thanks to the use of wickerwork, combines timeless elegance with the comfort of an armchair.
