Design classic: Relax armchair Barcelona -15 %

Läck Friday 🖤

The Barcelona armchair is a great classic that I am proud to present to you today.

This iconic piece of seating is characterised by its perfect design and a strong visual statement. It has become the ultimate and timeless image of elegance and comfort. 'Knoll' meanwhile upholsters the Barcelona armchair in full grain leathers that are soft to the touch and able to age gracefully.

The original design by Mies van der Rohe was presented back in 1929 for the Weimar Republic pavilion for the 1929 Barcelona Industrial Exhibition. Van der Rohe was considered an emerging figure in the modernist movement at the time.

Inside, Mies placed chairs and stools intended as resting places for the King and Queen of Spain. Determined to create a chair worthy of a royal couple, Mies is said to have based the designs on the campaign chairs of ancient Rome, with their distinctive cross-shaped frames.

Although the Barcelona Pavilion only stood for seven months, it is considered one of the most important achievements of modern architecture, as are the accompanying Barcelona Chairs (although the King and Queen reportedly never sat on them).
