Sit on it. Rock back and forth on it. Lean back. Or simply place it as a sculptural object in the middle of the room. With Knot XL, Ragnheiður Sigurðardóttir has evolved her iconic Knot cushion into an XL version—an informal and exceptionally comfortable seat for both home and public spaces. A design object that defies clear categorization.
“You don’t immediately know what it is at first glance,” explains Ragnheiður Sigurðardóttir. “I designed Knot XL as an open-ended product that leaves room for your own imagination.”
The designer grew up in Iceland and perfected the art of knot-tying early on as a Girl Scout. She has always been drawn to unusual objects that spark the imagination. “I try to create extraordinary designs—products that surprise and spark curiosity. Knot is inspired by Pop Art, pop-ups, and even Chinese lucky knots. It looks like a sculpture, but a sculpture with a function. Design should be playful, comfortable, and of high quality—and bring a smile to your face.”
The original Knot pillow emerged from an attempt to machine-knit a teddy bear’s legs instead of making them by hand. However, the knitted tubes kept getting longer and evolved into an experiment that first resulted in an exhibition piece and eventually in Knot XL—a sturdy yet soft seat for homes, offices, and informal public spaces. Knotted by hand, Knot XL looks like a sculpture when not in use and, when in use, invites you to sit, relax, and spend time together.
