AJ Royal is one of Arne Jacobsen’s designs, created in 1957 for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen (Radisson Collection). There, it could be found above the tables in the snack bar behind the atrium, in the lounge, and in the Panorama Lounge. The hotel opened in 1960 and was Copenhagen’s first true high-rise, heavily inspired by the skyscrapers of New York. At the time, the lamp was simply called the “AJ Pendant.” The segmented, spherical design from 1957 is considered Jacobsen’s first step back toward the basic geometric forms that would characterize the world-famous Danish architect’s later designs. The AJ Royal was part of the overall concept that Jacobsen developed for the hotel, from which a number of designs have achieved cult status. Jacobsen not only designed the hotel down to the smallest detail for SAS (Scandinavian Airlines), but also created nearly all of the hotel’s original furniture and everyday objects. The lamps are probably the best known worldwide, including the AJ lamp from 1957. Even today, the AJ Royal remains part of the original design series
