Alvar Aalto originally designed this pendant named 'A 110' for the building of the Finnish Association of Engineers. The same model of the 'A 110' was used shortly afterwards in the hall of the town hall in Säynätsalo. Today the pendant luminaire is a classic of Finnish design.
Due to its characteristic shape with a narrow stem and a wider head, which is reminiscent of a hand grenade, the lamp was nicknamed 'hand grenade'.
