Design book Alexander Girard

Alexander Girard (1907-1993) was one of the most important modern textile designers and interior architects of the 20th century. He worked closely with designers such as Charles Eames and George Nelson and combined influences from Pop Art and Folk Art to create a colorful, opulent formal language whose influence continues to reverberate today.

The richly illustrated catalog draws on Alexander Girard's extensive private estate, which has now been comprehensively catalogued for the first time at the Vitra Design Museum. The book shows the entire oeuvre of the American-Italian multi-talent in all its facets and at the same time provides the first scholarly critical examination of his work.

Six essays are devoted to Girard's textile and graphic design for the furniture manufacturer Herman Miller, important interior design projects such as the Irwin Miller House in Columbus, Indiana, and the restaurant La Fonda Del Sol in New York, his work as a pioneering exhibition organizer, and his work as a designer. His roots in Italy and his passion for folk art, which resulted in a collection of more than 100,000 objects and was one of the most important sources of inspiration for his own work.

In addition to extensive portfolios of never-before-seen archival materials, the publication also provides the first comprehensive biography and complete list of works.
