The 'Blue Moon', translated in German as 'Blauer Mond', is a rare lunar event that occurs on average only once every two and a half years. It marks the second full moon within a calendar month.

In fact, the term translated from English does not exist in German usage. This term originated from the English phrase 'Once in a blue moon', which translates: 'once in a blue moon'.
