The 'Armchair 42' or 'Little Paimio' is a cantilever chair from the famous pen of the Finnish design master Alvar Aalto. The chair was designed for the Paimio Sanatorium in 1932 and has enjoyed the status of a design classic ever since.
The frame is made of moulded birch and the seat shell is made of moulded birch plywood, which draws this characteristic line of the cantilever chair. The flowing shape of the design creates a soft and comfortable armchair without straight lines but with exceptional aesthetics. As the wood changes and yields over time, the two curved armrests, which run directly into the foot, are formed from a single piece of wood which is then divided into two halves.
So you are perfectly balanced on the otherwise very comfortable armchair.
