The Kaufmann table was originally designed for Finn Juhl's own home, just like many of his other iconic designs. A truly gorgeous piece with an unusually refined edge profile that gives the illusion of the tabletop floating above the frame.
Incidentally, you often see this mix of different woods at Juhl: the dark tabletop in walnut and the lighter frame in oak very clearly separate the supporting and the supported elements.
The many design details of the table have both a practical and a visual function: the brass detail on the crossbar gives the table a visually exclusive look and at the same time protects the wood from dirt if you were tempted to put your feet on it.
The table is made almost entirely by hand and is made of oak with a veneered walnut tabletop with solid edges.
Incidentally, the name of the table only came about after Juhl's death: Edgar Kaufmann Jr, director of the Museum of Modern Art, was Juhl's lifelong friend and 'discovered' the Danish designer. Thus, he was instrumental in launching his international career.
