Together with George Nelson and Charles and Ray Eames, the designer Alexander Girard is one of the defining figures of postwar American design. Girard's works enriched 20th-century design with a sensual and playful component that modernism had previously lacked in its classical manifestation. During his extensive travels, Girard was a fanatical collector of textiles and folk art from all over the world.
I particularly like his beautifully designed ornaments because of their reduced graphics. They seem simple, yet playful and have a 'yay' effect to them, though they come across as anything but kitschy. Created from metal in brass, they also convey warmth and fit with some motifs quite perfectly in the Christmas season, but are also an eye-catcher throughout the year.
