Helen's childhood is not a carefree one. Her mother copes with the separation from Helen's father Luc primarily with alcohol, while Luc devotes himself more to his reporter job and his changing girlfriends than to facing up to his responsibilities.
So Helen learns sooner than she would like how to get ready for kindergarten on her own and how to cover up her mother's outbursts in front of the onlooking neighbors. Fortunately, the Esposito family also lives there with son Frank, who holds Helen's hand and shares his packed lunch with her.
When Luc claims custody one day, Helen is faced with a fundamental decision. What course will her life take? Will she be successful, married to her sandbox love, but burdened with a debt that clouds family happiness? Or does she just want to go far away, finally be independent, try things out and reinvent herself?
